In late February a new vulture (Aegypius monachus) arrived at Alinya Natural Site brought in by representatives of the NGO GREFA. Trasgu is a young black vulture male that was donated by the Infiesto’s CRFS (wildlife rescue centre) near Oviedo, and has been placed in the pre-release aviary where he will stay for a minimum period of six months. Once the habituation period is over Trasgu will be released to join the incipient vulture colony of the Pre-Pyrenees region.
During its stay Trasgu will be housed with an unrelesable vulture that will keep him company -until it can be replaced by a healthy one-, prior to the release.
Trasgu is the 15th black vulture to join the project in Alinya since 2007, as part of the re-introduction project in Catalunya. Two of these vultures were released by the method of hacking, and the other 12, with Trasgu to follow, were released from the habituation aviary.
